The Grand Ceylon Loop — Unveiling Ceylon on Two Wheels

Arrival, bike pickup & countryside ride Your Sri Lanka motorcycle adventure begins in Negombo, just north of Bandaranaike International Airport. This is where the expedition comes to life — bikes are handed over, riding gear is checked, and the journey begins. Leaving the coast behind, ride through lush countryside, quiet villages and long open stretches before reaching Sigiriya, home to Sri Lanka’s legendary Lion Rock Fortress.

Ancient ruins & coastal landscapes Begin the day around Sigiriya, Sri Lanka’s iconic 5th-century Lion Rock Fortress. The roads around Sigiriya pass through lush countryside, villages and open stretches before the route turns northeast towards Trincomalee. Travel via Polonnaruwa through ancient ruins and rural landscapes before the air turns salty and the ride reaches the coast.

Relaxed coastal riding Start the day with Trincomalee’s laid-back coastal atmosphere, where quiet stretches of road run alongside the shoreline. Ride south towards Pasikuda through quiet villages, paddy fields and shimmering lagoons. As you reach Pasikuda, calm roads, golden sands and crystal-clear shallow waters create a perfect coastal reset after the ride.

Mountain climbs & tea estates Leave the peaceful eastern coastline behind and begin one of the most exciting climbing sections of the expedition. The road rises into Sri Lanka’s central highlands with tight switchbacks, sweeping curves and steady elevation changes. Ride through endless tea plantations and mist-covered hills before reaching Nuwara Eliya, known as “Little England.” Expect cooler mountain air, fog, damp sections and changing visibility as the terrain becomes more demanding.

Highlands to dry wilderness Ride out of the cool, misty highlands and descend towards Sri Lanka’s dry southeastern wilderness. The landscape changes dramatically from green tea country to dry jungle, open plains and wide horizons. Roads become longer and more remote as the journey approaches Yala. At Yala, trade two wheels for four and head into the national park for a wildlife safari, where elephants, birdlife and the possibility of leopard sightings make this a completely different kind of adventure.

Scenic coastal cruising After the rugged wilderness of Yala, the ride turns towards Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Enjoy smooth coastal roads, sweeping ocean views and lively seaside towns before reaching Mirissa. The route offers a more relaxed riding rhythm with the Indian Ocean never far from sight. Mirissa welcomes riders with golden sands, palm-lined shores and a laid-back beach atmosphere. It is also known for whale watching and ocean adventures.

Jungle roads & rainforest entry Leave the southern coast and head inland towards Sinharaja. As you move deeper into Sri Lanka’s southwest, the roads become narrower and more technical. Smooth roads gradually give way to tight winding paths through remote villages and dense rainforest. Expect humid conditions, damp roads, slippery patches, uneven sections and blind corners that demand careful riding and control.

River valleys & adventure terrain Continue through Sri Lanka’s lush interior towards Kitulgala. The route runs through rainforest, tea plantations, misty valleys and changing elevations. Wet patches and slippery corners keep the ride technical and engaging. On arrival, Kitulgala brings another kind of adventure with white-water rafting, canyoning, jungle trekking and river-based activities.

Return & departure Enjoy the final ride back towards Negombo, completing the Grand Ceylon Loop. Negombo becomes the expedition’s finish line — a place to unwind, reflect on the journey and prepare for departure after nine days of mountain roads, coastal highways, wildlife, rainforest and adventure.
